What is Meta Quest?

Meta Quest is the brand under which Meta sells standalone headsets that run games, fitness, productivity and mixed reality apps without a PC. The line descends from Oculus VR, which Facebook agreed to acquire on March 25, 2014 for approximately $2 billion in cash and stock. Facebook renamed itself Meta on October 28, 2021. Meta's Quest blog confirmed in January 2022 that "Oculus Quest from Facebook" branding was becoming "Meta Quest". Both current models run Meta Horizon OS.

Which Meta Quest headsets are sold new in September 2026?

Two. Meta's comparison page lists Quest 3S in 128GB and 256GB plus Quest 3 in 512GB. Both share the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor, 8GB of memory, three refresh rates (72Hz, 90Hz and 120Hz) and the same full color passthrough cameras, which Meta describes as 4MP at 18 pixels per degree. They differ in display, optics, field of view, battery and price.

Meta Quest 3 specs (claimed)

Quest 3 is the higher-end model. Meta's comparison page lists 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye, pancake lenses with continuous interpupillary adjustment, 25 pixels per degree, a 110 degree horizontal and 96 degree vertical field of view, a 5060 mAh battery rated for about 2.2 hours of general use and 512GB of storage. Meta does not publish a headset weight on the store, comparison or help pages checked.

Quest 3 went on sale on October 10, 2023 at $499.99 for 128GB and $649.99 for 512GB. When Quest 3S launched in October 2024, Meta dropped the 128GB model and cut the 512GB model to $499.99. On April 16, 2026 Meta announced a rise to $599.99 effective April 19, 2026, citing "the global surge in the price of critical components" and naming memory chips.

Meta Quest 3S specs (claimed)

Quest 3S is the entry model. It uses the Quest 2 generation display and optics: 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye, Fresnel lenses with three interpupillary positions, 20 pixels per degree and a 96 degree horizontal and 90 degree vertical field of view. Its 4324 mAh battery is rated for about 2.5 hours. Storage is 128GB or 256GB. Weight is likewise not disclosed on the Meta pages checked.

Quest 3S launched on October 15, 2024 at $299.99 for 128GB and $399.99 for 256GB. The April 2026 pricing update raised both by $50. A limited Xbox Edition bundle of the 128GB model went on sale on June 24, 2025 at $399.99.

Has Meta launched a new Quest headset in 2025 or 2026?

No. As of September 3, 2026 Meta has not announced any new Quest model with a name, price or date. The Xbox Edition is a bundle of existing hardware. Reports about future devices circulate under codenames, none confirmed by Meta, so this post omits them.

Which Meta Quest headsets are discontinued?

Quest 2 and Quest Pro. On September 25, 2024, the day it announced Quest 3S, Meta wrote: "With Quest 3S on the shelf, we're officially winding down sales of Quest 2 and Pro. We'll be selling our remaining headsets through the end of the year or until they're gone, whichever comes first." Quest Pro, launched at Connect in October 2022, stayed on sale through December 2024. Its meta.com page now reads "Meta Quest Pro is no longer available" and points to Quest 3.

Meta's security update policy promises at least five years of security updates from a device's first US sale and lists December 2027 for both Quest 2 and Quest Pro, October 10, 2028 for Quest 3 and October 15, 2029 for Quest 3S.

What is Meta Horizon OS?

Meta Horizon OS is the operating system on Quest headsets. Meta named it on April 22, 2024 in a newsroom post that also opened the OS to third-party hardware makers. The post named three partners: ASUS Republic of Gamers for a performance gaming headset, Lenovo for mixed reality devices aimed at productivity and learning and Xbox for "a limited-edition Meta Quest, inspired by Xbox."

Did any third-party Horizon OS headset ship?

No. Only the Xbox device reached customers, and it is a Meta-built Quest 3S in Xbox colors rather than third-party hardware. In December 2025 Meta told Road to VR: "We have paused the program to focus on building the world-class first-party hardware and software needed to advance the VR market." The statement added that Meta would "revisit opportunities for 3rd-party device partnerships as the category evolves." Neither the ASUS nor the Lenovo headset was released. As of September 3, 2026 Meta has not announced a restart.

Does Horizon OS support OpenXR?

Yes. OpenXR is the Khronos Group's cross-vendor API for XR applications. Meta's developer blog states that Meta has backed the standard since 2016, reached full compliance in 2019 and, from its v74 SDK in March 2025, made the built-in OpenXR path in Unity, Unreal and Godot the recommended way to build for Horizon OS.

Can Meta Quest be used for business?

Yes, but Meta no longer sells a business program to new customers. On January 15, 2026 Meta announced that from February 20, 2026 "Horizon managed services and commercial SKUs of Meta Quest will no longer be available for sale." Existing Horizon Managed Services (HMS) customers on Quest 3 and Quest 3S keep support until January 4, 2030, and from February 20, 2026 their HMS licenses became free. Meta's stated reason was a focus on "first-party consumer hardware and software." Consumer Quest 3 and 3S sales continue, so a company can still buy retail units, without the commercial license, warranty or fleet management that went with them. Meta Horizon Workrooms, Meta's VR meeting app, was discontinued on February 16, 2026.

What Quest for Business included

Quest for Business launched in 2023 and was renamed Horizon Managed Services in 2025. UploadVR's reporting lists the package as a commercial license and warranty, priority support and mass device management (MDM), at $15 per headset per month in Individual Mode or $24 in Shared Mode. Meta's current pages no longer publish those figures, so they are attributed to reporting.

The Microsoft partnership

The Microsoft tie-up is still shipping. On October 11, 2022 Microsoft announced that Microsoft 365 apps, Windows 365 and Mesh for Teams would come to Quest and that Intune and Azure Active Directory would support Quest Pro and Quest 2. Word, Excel and PowerPoint arrived in December 2023 as progressive web apps, per Meta's blog. On October 30, 2025 Microsoft declared Mixed Reality Link and the Windows App for Meta Quest generally available on Quest 3 and 3S, connecting a headset to a Windows 11 PC or a Windows 365 Cloud PC on Horizon OS v81. BestInXR has not verified whether Intune support extends to Quest 3.

What has Meta announced for Connect 2026?

Only the date. Meta Connect 2026 runs September 23 to 24, 2026 at Meta's campus in Menlo Park, California, per a Meta post dated May 12, 2026. Meta says it will cover VR, wearables, the metaverse and AI and names AI glasses, Meta Quest and Muse Spark as topics. No Quest hardware, price or Horizon OS partner has been announced ahead of the event.

Where does Meta Quest sit against other headsets?

For a side by side against Apple, Pico, Pimax and other current headsets, see the BestInXR guide to the best XR headsets, which compares them on disclosed criteria. Manufacturer entries, including Meta, live in the BestInXR directory. No entry is paid.
