Sony Group Corporation has assigned 43 U.S. patents and applications covering head mounted displays and augmented reality to Meta Platforms, Inc., according to five assignments recorded at the USPTO between June 30 and September 18, 2026. The recorded Confirmatory Assignment, effective December 17, 2025, lists 186 patent families, with filings in the United States, Japan, China and South Korea among them.
In short:
- What the record shows: Sony Group transferred its interest in 43 U.S. patents and applications to Meta, across five recordings in the USPTO Assignment Center.
- How wide it runs: the agreement's Schedule 1 lists 186 patent families with priority dates from 2007 to 2020.
- What it covers: head mounted displays, display control, wearable cameras and processing that places virtual objects in a real scene.
What the USPTO records
Every record names Sony Group Corporation as assignor and Meta Platforms, Inc. of Menlo Park as assignee, with the conveyance "assignment of assignor's interest". Four were executed on December 17, 2025 and one on April 30, 2026. The largest two carry most of the U.S. portfolio: reel 75375, frame 0902 holds 16 properties and reel 76071, frame 0572 holds 21.

The titles read like a history of Sony's head-worn display work. The 16-property record opens with four generations of one head mounted display family by Akihiro Komori and Hiroshi Mukawa, including US 9,189,829, which Google Patents now lists under Meta Platforms. The 21-property record opens with US 8,751,969, an information processor for displaying a virtual image.
Two of the 43 listed properties carry unrelated titles, a fluorinated water repellent and a mass spectrometry method. The Assignment Center states that it records what it receives without verifying it, so read the schedule rather than the title list when counting.
What the agreement says
The document recorded at reel 75141, frame 0267 is titled Confirmatory Assignment. It assigns Sony's "undivided interest" in the scheduled patents, including continuations, patents granted later and the right to recover damages for past infringement. Consideration is recorded as "good and valuable", so the price stays between the two companies.
Sony Group is the parent company. The PlayStation business that sells PlayStation VR2 is Sony Interactive Entertainment, and every one of the five records names the parent as assignor. The record documents a transfer of patents, and it states no reason for one and no plan for any product.
